About Reverse Tax Calculator

A free, accurate reverse tax calculator built for accountants, small business owners, shoppers, and anyone who needs to work backwards from a tax-inclusive total.

Why We Built This

Reverse tax calculation sounds trivial until you have to do it at volume. A single receipt? Just read the subtotal. But when you're reconciling a month's worth of expense receipts, processing tax-inclusive invoices from international vendors, or spot-checking whether an e-commerce platform has been charging the right rate, you need a tool that nails the math every time.

The common mistake is subtracting the tax rate from the total. That gives a wrong answer every time. Pay $108 at an 8% rate and the pre-tax price is $100.00. Subtract 8% of $108 and you land at $99.36 instead. That 64-cent error compounds fast across high-volume bookkeeping. The correct approach uses division: Pre-Tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). Same formula the AICPA, every major accounting standard, and every competent bookkeeper relies on.

We built this site because we couldn't find a clean, no-nonsense reverse tax calculator that also explained the math. Most results were either ad-cluttered tools with zero explanation, or textbook-style discussions without an actual calculator. We wanted both: instant calculation plus clear methodology.

What the Calculator Covers

The reverse tax calculator handles both directions. The reverse direction (most common) pulls the pre-tax price out of a tax-inclusive total. The forward direction starts with a pre-tax price and adds tax on top. Both work for any percentage rate: US state and local sales tax (0% to 10%+), European VAT (usually 20 to 25%), Australian GST (10%), Canadian HST, and any custom percentage you type in.

The six preset state rates (California, Texas, New York, Florida, Washington, Illinois) come from the Tax Foundation's annual combined state-and-local averages and get refreshed when rates change. For a specific city or county rate, use your state's Department of Revenue address lookup to get the exact figure. The presets are accurate enough for estimates and day-to-day bookkeeping.

Our Editorial Standards

Every factual claim on this site is verified against the primary source before publication. Tax rates come from the Tax Foundation and state Department of Revenue websites. Formula methodology references the AICPA and IRS Publication 535. Blog posts get reviewed for accuracy against the tool spec before they go live. We don't publish generic "tax tips" that aren't directly relevant to the calculation this tool performs.

We update rates and content when authoritative sources update. The "Last Updated" date on each page reflects when the content was last verified, not just when it was published.

Correct Formula, Always

We use division, not subtraction. Pre-Tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100), the same formula accountants and point-of-sale systems use. Verified against AICPA standards.
